Extreme Saver - Socks Edition
So, I've been known to go to extremes when saving money. I'm in the Air Force so it's already assumed that I don't make any real money. I must reduce my expenses to increase my bottom line. Remember the only REAL equation you need is: Income - Expenses = Bottom Line. I try to reduce my expenses as far down as they can reasonably go.
One EXTREME way I save money is to handle my socks effectively. Clothing expenses can get real costly if not managed effectively. Here are some ways I save money with my socks:
One EXTREME way I save money is to handle my socks effectively. Clothing expenses can get real costly if not managed effectively. Here are some ways I save money with my socks:
- Reduce the available elastic. The elastic sock band is the first thing to go with socks. Nothing is worse then when the elastic band wears out. Buy ankle socks are smaller. These smaller socks have less elastic and don't go on as far up the leg. The farther they go up the leg, the more you must pull on them.
- Don't use bleach when you clean your socks. Bleach pre-maturely wears out socks. The bleach eats away at the fabric and you will get holes faster.
- Clean socks properly. If you don't regularly go outside in your socks, the only real dirty part of your socks is the inside of them. This is where you sweat in them. You should turn your socks inside out.
- You should have a front load washer because they save electricity and save your clothes. this was already addressed in some of my energy conservation and utility bill topics.
- Some people tend to only buy enough socks for one week because people (without babies) do laundry once a week. This is putting a constant wear on the socks. Buy enough for two wash cycles and they will be on a rotation.
- Don't fold them together in a ball. This puts pressure on the socks constantly. If you flatten them out and let them sit naturally, it can save room in your drawer and releases tension.
These are things I actually do in my house. My wife thinks I'm crazy. I'm not the one buying socks all the time though.

And the obvious, buy only socks of one brand and style. then, if and when a sock wears out, you can still have a matching pair. Hubby learned this in the Navy from his Chief and still does it, 30+ years later.
Also:
* Let your socks air dry. Dryer heat breaks down the elastic.
* Learn how to darn socks so you can repair them when they get holes.
* Buy socks in bulk. For example, if you buy a package of five pairs of black socks, then you lose one or two, the rest all still have matches.
* Use sock garters to hold up sagging socks under long pants.
Holy Crap!!! I think i've seen it all from you. Put a sock in it...
